An international project like the Hope and Optimism Portfolio needs a lot of
careful preparation. Hundreds of people were involved in the process that
took several years and many, many letters, faxes, and telephone calls: not just
the artists, but governments (Ministries of Culture, Education, Foreign Affairs
and Trade, as well as a number of Embassies), curators and directors of National
Galleries and Museums and major cultural organisation from all over the planet.
To give you an idea of the correspondence that preceded the creation of the Hope and Optimism Portfolio, we include here a few samples of the letters that the Project Director, Mr Orde Levinson, and his colleagues, received from governments, National Galleries, and from the artists themselves. Most interviews have been conducted by Orde Levinson. On Occasions, the artists submitted personal statements. These two visions, essay and interview/personal statement, together with the completed Questionnaire, have provided an indelible current chronicle of a country as seen by one of their nationally recognised artists.
